If planning is important then an annual planning process is absolutely vital.
A couple of folks have asked me to expand on what my January planning activities look like. So here we go!
During January I work on the year ahead as I:
- finalise major program initiatives
- figure out what mentoring programs I will run
- plan my Sunday Morning preaching topics
- complete my travel itinerary
- set my annual goals
I like doing this in January because it is the quietest time in our church calendar therefore our office is not so busy & buzzing.
I find I need peace & quiet to concentrate – definitely no music, I’m a baby boomer! Though I do like having other people around whom I can harass when I am overwhelmed by it all!
Another plus about January is I have no travel commitments so my time is less pressured.
I love doing this on the blank canvas of A3 paper. I doodle, brainstorm ideas & ask prayerful questions like “What do you want us to do that we are not yet contemplating?”
It’s important to leave space in your calendar, week, day, meetings for God to act above & beyond our wildest dreams.
All this thinking, reflecting & planning enables us to enter the year with a sense of what Christ has planned for us.
