If I had an hour or two with a church planter over coffee here’s 5 questions I would ask them:
1. Who’s on your team?
Your team will impact your church’s health and your fruitfulness in the first two years so choose slowly and carefully.
2. Who do you want to reach?
No church reaches everyone so you need to get specific about who you are trying to reach. Both Jesus and Paul certainly were and you should emulate them.
3. How much fun is scheduled into your first year?
Seriously, you would ask that question? Hey, who’s asking the questions here!? Yes, I would. Unless you are a leader with a high profile and a significant following your plant will invariably start with a small number of people. People gel better when they’re having fun so amongst all the seriousness of church growth endeavors make sure you plan loads of fun.
4. Who are you comparing yourself to?
A deadly trap for church planters is playing the comparison game. Don’t.
5. Who’s your coach and mentor?
Just like that famous credit card, you should not leave home without a coach and mentor who can ask probing questions and give timely advice. It’s preferable that the sending pastor is that person but not always doable in an imperfect world.
